Despite common misconceptions outside the city, New York residents are not rude. Quite the opposite, in fact. We're willing to tell somebody the time, give directions, recommend a restaurant, and help with a stroller on subway stairs. And, as pointed out above, they will serve graciously and respectfully on jury duty. Ask and ye shall receive.
But the helpfulness has one hard and fast limitation: New Yorkers are in a constant rush to get somewhere. So long as the person asking for help realizes this, all will be well with the world. Ask quickly and expect a quick response. But go into a long drawn-out story, or give the appearance of wasting time, and New York-style impatience will kick in.
