The Internet still gets 50 new TLDs a year, ICANN doesn't get fatter, and the folks who register in them get to learn that there are risks in life, particularly when you're trying to get something you don't understand for cheap. There are no significant technical downsides. I don't hope that the lottery-becomes-auction happens, but if it is inevitable, why not let it happen?
