Re: Tech politics
by Brooks_I
As a member of my county's child protection team, I have seen too many instances of the effects of the over sexualization of society, much of it propagated through the internet. The internet can be a dangerous instrumentality in this respect. Moreover, content filtering solutions are quite inadequate and can easily be spoofed. Many schools limit their liability in this area through "acceptable use policies" on behalf of school administrators, a solution I find offensive in the extreme. As a parent, the only conclusively safe technological solution I have found to the dilemma of giving my kid access to good internet content while preventing the bad is to run an in-house virtual internet of sites that I have pre-selected for viewing. I use Blue Squirrel products to do this and, so far as I have been able to determine, they are the only provider of this type of software which brings structured web sites into a local server. This seems to raise an issue of balancing IP rights against a public policy of child protection. Obviously you know where I come down on the question. I would be interested in your position.
