Re: Why Google Is Right
by Ren Reynolds
Susan >7. It's impossible for Google to say to all publishers (what a big world!) "tell us which books you WANT us to scan, and we'll do it." No, it’s just very difficult. But heck, asking those pesky rights holders is always a bit annoying. If the arguments from Cory Doctoro are right then publishers would be clambering to get their books indexed. How does it happen in the Film world? Don’t they have to do extensive and very expensive rights clearance? Why is google different? Oh, yeh, and now don’t brands try to get into films,,, > (Imagine running a search engine on this basis.) So Google is doing the next best possible thing -- giving people an easy way to opt out of the project. OK, you mandate that search engines can’t index a page unless there is a tag on it. Fine, HTML editors, shared sites, servers and caches would probably put setting in so that this could be defaulted on pages. Doesn’t seem that hard.
